Flowers and chocolates aside, Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romance; it’s also a great opportunity to show care and appreciation for those around you. As a home care provider, our teams see the wonderful impact that acts of kindness can have – from big things like providing ongoing care for a loved one, to the little things like taking out the bins for a neighbour, or having a cuppa with a friend.

This Valentines’ Day let’s celebrate the spirit of caring with ten ways you can show the people in your life that you care.

  1. Spend some quality time together. In busyness of daily life, spending some time with a friend or family member is such a precious gift. Something as simple as playing a boardgame together, watching a favourite TV show, or going for a walk in the park is a great way to nurture your relationship.
  2. Send a message that you care. Take the time to send someone in your life an email, text, or even a card to encourage them and lift their spirits. It may seem like a small gesture, but it could be just the thing to brighten their day.
  3. Provide a meal. If you know someone who is living alone, or who cares for an older person or a loved one with a disability, providing a meal is a great way to not only show you care, but provide practical assistance to help them with day-to-day life.
  4. Don’t forget about the little things. Small acts of kindness can go a long way. Whether it’s helping someone in the garden, running an errand, or dropping by to check in on an elderly neighbour, take the time reach out to those around you – everyone will be richer for it.
  5. Create a memory jar. This is a fun idea! Start a memory jar where family members can write down their favourite memories, kind words, or expressions of love. The contents can be read out in moments when times get tough. It’s also a great way to engage someone who is living with dementia.
  6. Don’t dismiss the old fashioned phone call. For those who live far away, organise a time to have a regular phone call to catch up and share how your lives are going. It doesn’t have to be time-consuming; you could go on a walk and chat to someone at the same time, or use the time commuting from work to check in with your friends and family.
  7. Give the gift of relaxation. Here’s another great one for carers. Surprise someone who deserves a break with a voucher for a massage, day spa, or facial. If budget is an issue, send them a care pack with herbal teas, at home facial kits, and a scented candle so they can create their very own spa experience at home!
  8. Say thank you. It sounds so simple, but we often neglect simply saying ‘thank you’ to the people in our lives. Take the time to express your appreciation for someone with a simple thanks, whether in person, or a thoughtful note.
  9. Look out for those in need. Is there someone in your life – perhaps an older relative or a neighbour – who needs a helping hand? Taking notice and offering to help with daily tasks such as taking out the rubbish or going to the shops can make an impact.
  10. Start a healthy habit together. As a home care provider, we know how important a person’s health and wellbeing is. Start a healthy habit together, such as going for walks, or learning how to cook healthy and tasty meals. It’s good for the body and the soul!
