To be eligible for Supported Independent Living, you must be able to prove that you have significant housing needs, and that because of your disability, SIL is a ‘reasonable and necessary’ support in order for you to live an independent life in the community.

SIL does not cover costs such as the rent or mortgage repayments of your home, utility bills (e.g. electricity, internet, water), mobile phone plans, home repairs, day-to-day living expenses such as food or recreation activities, vehicle costs, holidays, discretionary spend, or items that are already covered by other NDIS supports, such as mobility equipment and independent living aids.

Applying to have SIL included in your NDIS plan can be a complex and time-consuming process, so it’s best to ask your support coordinator to help you. They can help you get your reports ready, and ensure you give appropriate evidence to apply for SIL funding. If you don’t have one, talk to your Local Area Coordinator during your NDIS Plan meeting and ask if you can get one included in your NDIS plan, or tell them that you’d like to explore having SIL included in your plan.

A good place to start looking is logging on to your NDIS portal and using the ‘Provider Finder’ tool. This online tool helps you find information about NDIS registered providers in your area by performing a search based on your suburb and postcode. Some other ways to find quality SIL providers near you is to ask other NDIS participants for recommendations, do research online (be sure that any provider you consider is registered to provide their services with the NDIS), or you could ask your support coordinator about SIL providers in your area.

Finding the right SIL home can take time. Some things you will need to consider are:

• Whether the support to housemate ratio matches the level of support stated in your assessment
• Whether the household meets the requirements in your assessment
• The mix of housemates and whether you can get along with the people you’ll be living with
• The location of the home, and how close it is to your support network
• Whether you like the house you’ll be living in, and feel comfortable there
• If you can access all the supports you need from the provider

A Roster of Care (or RoC) is usually created by your SIL provider, and they will consult with you to ensure that you are happy with it. The roster shows what a typical week looks like, and is used to assess how much SIL funding is ‘necessary and reasonable’ for you. Once your Roster of Care and NDIS Plan is submitted to the NDIA and approved, you will receive SIL funding that is used to pay for supports from your SIL provider.
