STANDING UP FOR YOURSELF IN CARE

Hi everyone, I’m Kylie from On Our Own Tracks. I’ve received disability home care for years and I rely on someone for physical services and support Despite this, I will always maintain that I, just like all of you, have the same right to autonomy, choice and control as any other person, no matter what your disability.

Yes, some of you, like myself, live in care and need to keep in your thoughts that’s exactly what it is: a disability support agency who you are paying to care for you and assist where needed.

But never think of yourself as a job; always remember that you are paying for disability support providers and you should expect good service.

Here are five of my tips on how to advocate for yourself:

  1. I often exercise my inner lawyer when the people assisting me begin to take away my right, choice or control given to most others.
  2. Make sure your voice is heard, and you are living your life your way.
  3. Never be afraid to communicate your thoughts, even if it means going to an outside advocate
  4. I like to document and discuss any issues – the client should never feel so intimidated that they don’t voice concerns.
  5. The only way things get resolved is if they are raised.

At Home Caring, we believe every person deserves to be in control of their support. That’s why our team go above and beyond to provide empowering, person-centred support that gives you genuine choice and control over your services.

Please email us today and one of our wonderful Relationships Managers will contact you shortly rm@homecaring.com.au or put in your referral using this form and we can begin the journey together today.
