At Home Caring, we are constantly looking for new ways to help our clients and ensure they receive the best care and support. That’s why we are delighted to be an NDIS Assistive Technology provider. We supplyhigh quality, competitively priced assistive technology to our NDIS clients from reputable brands you can trust.
If you need aids to help you live independently at home and get around the community, here’s a quick rundown on how Assistive Technology can help.
The NDIS provides funding for people with disabilities to access services that can help them reach their goals. Alongside care services, therapy, training and capacity building programs, this also includes funding for a category called ‘Assistive Technology’.
The official definition used by the NDIS for ‘assistive technology’ comes directly from the World Health Organisation. Essentially, it is any device or system that enables users to perform many tasks that they would otherwise be unable to do.This includes things such as lift chairs, mobility scooters, power wheelchairs, walking frames, cpap machines, hospital beds and shower chairs. Assistive technology items help keep the person safe and comfortable, as well as allowing them to do more tasks on their own.
For a more comprehensive list of what is included as NDIS Assistive Technology, you can download the most recent Assistive Technology and Consumables Code Guide from the NDIS website.
Mobility Caring, a part of the Home Caring Group, specialises in high quality Assistive Technology products that enable you to live more independently at home.
Due to our team’s wealth of experience in the caring industry, we thoroughly understand what equipment works best in real life situations. Mobility Caring only stocks the most reputable brands, so you can be sure you’re getting a high quality product you can trust.
Our extensive range of NDIS Assistive Technology products includes (but is not limited to):
Our lift chairs can help you sit and stand without assistance, so you can live more independently at home. We offer a range of options, with different recline positions and fabric options available.
If you have limited mobility, a battery-powered mobility scooter can help you get out and about. We provide lightweight travel scooters, off-road scooters for longer outings and sturdy models with a higher weight capacity.
We can match you with the right wheelchair to suit your needs, whether that’s a power wheelchair, foldable wheelchair, lightweight manual wheelchair, or a transit wheelchair for a carer to push.
To help you move around more easily, we provide high quality walkers and rollators (wheeled walkers) designed for safety and convenience with adjustable handles, handbrakes and storage.
A home care bed or hospital bed can help reduce your risk of injury and increase comfort. We offer a range of options with fully adjustable positioning functions that help you to sit up and get in and out of bed.
Our hoists provide the support you need to safely and easily transfer people to and from a floor, bed or chair. If you can pull yourself up to a standing position, some models also allow you to practice standing and develop leg strength.
Pressure mattresses offer comfort, support and protection against pressure sores if you are in bed for a long period of time. Some of our designs also come with a ventilation system that provides a cooler surface to sleep on.
A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine (sometimes called a ‘sleep apnoea machine’) keeps your upper airway open with mild air pressure so you can breathe normally while you sleep. We provide designs that adjust pressure levels to fit your changing needs, so you’re always receiving the lowest pressure needed.
We provide small and lightweight POCs (Portable Oxygen Concentrators) that are easy to travel with. They can be set on continuous flow, pulse dose or sleep flow mode, depending on what you need.
Our range of high quality physiotherapy equipment includes crutches, patient handling equipment, TENS machines for electrotherapy, compression bandages, exercise equipment, braces, orthoses and treadmills.
Bathroom hygiene products make showering and personal care much easier. We can provide you with aids such as shower chairs, toileting aids, bath boards and safety equipment like grab rails and non-slip mats.
We provide a wide range of assistive technology that can help improve daily living and make tasks easier, such as eating and cooking aids, personal alarms and signage.
You can explore our complete range on the Mobility Caring website. We also have several guides on what to consider when buying a mobility scooter, lift chair, power chair and wheelchair to help you make the best decision for your needs.
Mobility Caring also provides maintenance on mobility equipment with an online booking service. If you need anything repaired or serviced, we are more than happy to help.
As a registered NDIS provider, Mobility Caring can help you use your funding to purchase high qualityAssistive Technology that helps you reach your goals. There aredifferent levels of NDIS Assistive Technology funding thatis available, as categorised by the National Disability Insurance Agency. These are:
Assistive Technology can range from simple to very complex, bespoke solutions. An assessment is often needed to determine which solution best suits your circumstances, and therefore what level of funding you are eligible for.
AT assessments are conducted by an AT Assessor who examines your needs and situations, and helps you identify the most appropriate AT solution. This could be a health practitioner, nurse, AT mentor or rehabilitation engineer.
For more complex equipment or home modification requests, you may need to submit a report from an AT assessor and quotes for the new equipment or modification. We can help you through this process; please get in touch for more information.
While the NDIS funds a wide range of equipment, there are some things that aren’t covered by the Assistive Technology category. This includes:
To access funding for NDIS Assistive Technology as part of your individual plan, you will need to complete an assistive technology assessment. The aim of this assessment, as mentioned above, is to ensure that both you and the NDIA fully understand which assistive technology solutions are going to be most suitable for your needs and goals.
It is worth noting that the process that you will go through depends on the assistive technology required. For instance, if items are low cost or low risk, you do not need a form to be sent directly into the NDIS. Instead, if you have funds in your plan, you can find the equipment and purchase it for yourself.
On the other hand, complex and specialised Assistive Technology requires a full assessment form. Thismust be completed by the Assistive Technology Assessor. In some cases, a higher level of consideration towards the use of assistive technology will be necessary. This could be due to specific concerns about the individual or the environment where the equipment is going to be used.
While this may sound complex, Home Caring is always available to help you access Assistive Technology supported by your NDIS plan.
As a registered NDIS provider, our aim is to help you get approved for the equipment you need, and reap the absolute maximum benefits from any item you purchase. Through Mobility Caring, we can also help you purchase brands that are reputable and trustworthy, as well as competitively priced.
Alternatively, you might already be using AT but interested in replacing what you have or exploring different options that are available. We can help with this as well, and will work to deliver all the information that you need. Remember: your funding can cover the option to choose, trial and select new forms of AT that could help you accomplish your goals and lead to a better quality of life.
We can also help you understand the best ways assistive technology can fit into your plan and be incorporated into your care routine. Our expert team are highly knowledgeable about everything related to Assistive Technology. You can also use our service to trial a massive range of products and items. The Australian Government has announced significant changes to the aged care system introducing the Support at Home program set to commence on 1 July 2025. This initiative aims to enhance support for older Australians enabling them to remain in their homes longer and receive more personalised care.
Key Features of the Support at Home Program:
• Reduced Wait Times: The program will shorten the waiting period for in-home aged care services ensuring timely assistance for those in need.
• Tailored Support Levels: Support at Home introduces eight levels of ongoing care replacing the previous four, to better match individual needs.
• No Caps on Cleaning and Gardening: Unlike previous programs there will be no annual caps on cleaning and gardening services allowing for more comprehensive support.
• Care Management Cap: A 10% cap on care management costs will remain in place to maintain affordability.
• Assistive Technology Access: The program will expedite access to assistive devices like walkers and wheelchairs enhancing mobility and independence.
• Increased Support Funding: The maximum support level will rise from $61,000 to $78,000, providing more resources for those with complex needs.
• Restorative and Allied Health Services: There will be a temporary funding boost for restorative and allied health services, aiding recovery and well-being.
• Palliative Care Support: The program includes provisions for palliative care allowing older Australians to spend their final weeks at home surrounded by loved ones.
Staged Implementation of Price Caps:
Price caps on services will be phased in starting from 1 July 2026. For the first year providers will continue to set their own prices similar to the current Home Care Packages program. In early 2025, consultations will be held with older people, advocates, families, carers and the sector to ensure fair pricing and robust consumer protections during this transition.
No Worse Off Principle:
To protect existing Home Care Package recipients, the government has introduced the “No Worse Off” principle:
• Grandfathering: Individuals approved for a Home Care Package as of 12 September 2024 will transition to the new system without financial disadvantage.
• Fee Structure: If you were a full-rate pensioner paying no fees under your Home Care Package as of 12 September 2024, you will continue to pay no fees under Support at Home. If you were required to pay fees, you will pay the same or less under the new program.
At Home Caring we are dedicated to supporting our older community members through these changes. We are committed to ensuring the financial safety and well-being of our clients providing personalised care that aligns with the new Support at Home program. Our team is here to assist you in navigating these updates, ensuring you receive the care and support you deserve. 🩵
