If you’re living with a disability, then it’s possible that you’ll be eligible for financial help from the government. In the coming years, a significant amount of cash will be made available to people with disabilities. Indeed, within five years, we’ll get to a point where there’s some $22 billion available each year. That’s a lot of help! But of course, how that cash is allocated will be dependent on many factors.
In this blog, we’re going to look at NDIS SIL (National Disability Insurance Scheme, Supported Independent Living), who’s eligible, what the funding can be used for, and so on. If you’re looking into independent living options NDIS, then you’ll find plenty of useful information on this page.
What Is NDIS Funding?
To begin, let’s think about NDIS funding, and what exactly it is. You can get a lot of the meaning from the full name, which is ‘National Disability Insurance Scheme.’ There are many elements to NDIS, but the main thing you need to know is that it’s designed to help people with disabilities improve their quality of life. If you’re eligible for NDIS supported independent living, then you’ll receive financial help that’ll make your life more manageable and enjoyable.
What Is Supported Independent Living?
You might have heard of Support Independent Living, but what is it? Often stylised as SIL supported independent living, this is when staff are made available to a person that has disabilities. This staff will provide care for the person in their own home, which will be within shared accommodation. These services are provided by SIL providers. Independent living services allow people to remain in control of their life and remain autonomous, all the while receiving a little bit of help along the way. Indeed, the best way to think of independent supported living is as ‘that little bit of help.’
What Type of Support is Offered?
The supported independent living program aims to provide some support for people that have a disability. There are a wide range of actions and types of help offered by the sil ndis. The services are provided by supported independent living providers, who can offer help with many tasks. For example, a person might need help in cooking and cleaning at home. They may need help with their personal care, or help with their social skills. They may require a little bit of assistance in helping to get their finances in order, or help getting from A to B.
One of the key advantages of supported living is that it’s individually tailored to the needs of the person that will receive the services. That means they can help in the areas where they need help the most, without additional, unnecessary extras.
What Type of Support Is Not Included?
While ndis independent living covers a lot of the daily tasks and needs of a person, they won’t cover everything. There are some things that the person will have to pay for on their own. For example, the majority of everyday living expenses are not covered by the supported independent living ndis program.
This includes the person’s rent, utility bills, food and other home supplies, and their entertainment. Aside from everyday costs, there are also some other restrictions regarding what the money can be used for. For example, a person could not use their funding to buy technology or equipment. Transport and most therapeutic services are also not covered.
Different Levels of Support
There are three different levels of support for people with disabilities under the NDIS funding scheme. The support levels are divided into: Lower Needs, Standard Needs, and Higher Needs.
Lower Needs
Lower needs are not available all day. They tend to be things that are non-urgent and which can be performed at any time. For example, supervision of living arrangements.
Standard Needs
Standard needs are 24/7 support services. Tasks that would fall into this category would include daily tasks that the person with disability can perform on their own, but which sometimes require assistance and support.
Higher Needs
Higher needs refer to 24/7 active support. These types of tasks are ones that the person cannot manage on their own without assistance.
How to Qualify for NDIS Funding
There are certain requirements that you’ll need to meet if you’re to qualify for NDIS funding, which you can then use for Supported Independent Living. At a minimum, you must be under the age of 65. You must be in Australia, and have legal resident status. And you must receive help and assistance from another person on a regular basis, because you have a disability that is both permanent and significant. If you meet that criteria, and NDIS is available in your area, then you may be eligible.
What are the Advantages of Supported Independent Living?
This program was designed with a simple objective in mind: to allow people with disabilities to live a life that has more choice and which is under their control. It’s for people with a disability that want to live independently. It allows people to get the level and type of care that they need, without having to jump through hoops. It’s a customizable approach that is flexible and affordable, and which can greatly enhance the person’s life. And all you need to do is apply for funding and wait to be accepted!
